Gaming Needs to Get Diversified
editorial The Associated Press takes another look at the Urban Video Academy, a game programming boot camp for minorities, first mentioned back in May. The article says that about 80 percent of video game programmers are white and that the program hopes to add more diversity to game creation. It sounds like the program is doing well, so far 50 high school students are in the Maryland class which started in late June. More than 200 students applied for the 20 slots available in the Atlanta program, which just started. The story includes interviews with Ian Bogost of Georgia Tech and Jason Della Rocca, head of the IGDA. It's definitely worth a read. Video Game Industry Seeking Minorities [AP]

Impact is a finite element program for simulation of dynamic events such as car crashes or other large deformation events. It is kept very simple to make it intuitive to use and easy to change and extend. The program includes a NURBS based pre-processor for modelling, a solver with editor, a post-processor, and a graph plotter for results viewing. Impact also interfaces with several other programs, such as Nastran and Gmsh. License: GNU General Public License (GPL) Changes: A significant effort has been made in trying to improve GUI user friendliness. Extrusion and Revolve commands now produce more accurate geometry when arcs are used. Pictures can now be written from the postprocessor on all platforms (not only Windows). Collapsed quad elements generated by the preprocessor are automatically converted to triangles. Finally, this release contains speed improvements and code optimizations as well as bugfixes.

I agree with the above posters that this is the greatest game/simulation of stock car racing out there. Its mechanics and simple and elegant and when you add in the optional and advanced rules, it becomes a game of planning and strategy as well. I have I think some good news. I was at the World Boardgaming Championships (WBC) this past week where the game was back after a two to three year hiatus. Both Mike Garton and John McLaughlin (the game designers) were there and ran a full series of races as part of the event. They do not seem to be making more copies of the existing game (although I heard that there were a few sold at auction at a pretty hefty premium) but the good news is they are back into game design and are looking at playtesting what could wind up as a third edition of their product. Let's hope for fans of the game that they will do so, and it will be bigger and even better than the last edition.
